Creating Online Content from PowerPoint

Adding audio, video, formative quizing, and remedial branching

There are times when you need to create a 5 to 10 minute presentation on an important point and post it to your D2L course for students to view. Or you may be looking for ways to also add a few more features in order to turn this into more of an instructional resource. For example: adding a video introduction, formative test items and some remediation based on test results.

This page deals exclusively with the process of adding audio, video, formative quizing, and remedial branching to a short PowerPoint presentation using Presenter 7. OIA has a quiet room which can be used to record your audio and video and otherwise create the presentation.

Let's start with a sample of what we are talking about:

EXAMPLE - OK, as a recovering lawyer I couldn't resist the temptation to create some content about something legal. Don't pay too much attention to the content as it is deliberately simplistic. Instead focus on the utilization of Presenter 7 to add instructional features to a PowerPoint presentation.

Presenter Demo: Intro To The Supreme Court

The software:

Adobe Presenter - A PowerPoint add-in for Windows running 32 bit Office 2010. If you installed the 64 bit Office 2010 on your computer you will need to uninstall it and use the 32 bit version instead. Having a 64 bit computer is not the issue, but the version of Office. A 32 bit Office program runs fine on a 64 bit computer. Unless you are a power Excel user, there is nothing you need from the 64 bit version of Office anyway.

Unfortunately there is no MAC version of this program.

The bookstore (CATS) can sell you a license for $75. The educational version from Adobe runs about $150 and the regular version is $500. You can download and "Try" it out before buying it.

Presenter will produce a flash enhanced, "interactive" PDF file which will work on all MACs and PCs, but not on iPhones, iPods or iPads.

Getting Started with Presenter - a PowerPoint presentation created by Adobe for new users of Presenter.

Using Adobe Presenter to augment PPT Presentations - (9.5 min.) This presentation by Adobe illustrates the program's ability to record slide audio, record/insert video from your webcam, and adding a quiz. Although it talks about PowerPoint 2007, it is fully applicable for PowerPoint 2010. In order to get the best file size results PLEASE use the 2010 version of PowerPoint.
